Cedar Drive
Meet the Teacher
My name is Mr Cullum and I am thrilled to be teaching Cedar Drive in what will be my first full year at Templars Academy. I am now in my 9th year as a teacher and love how every day is still so different to the one before. We certainly have lots of exciting topics to look forward to in Year 5 and can’t wait to make our learning enjoyable and fun. I cannot wait to get to know each and every one of your personalities and see the progress you can make across the academic year. I am a huge believer of coming to school for two reasons: to learn and have fun!
One of my favourite subjects is Maths (subject lead in the school) - without a doubt! I love all things sport related too. However, I have also found a love for many other subjects since becoming a teacher, such as: science; geography and D&T!
Things to Remember
- PE Kits must be in school at all times. Our PE days are Wednesday and Fridays. Each Friday, I will send PE Kits home with your child to be washed.
- Water Bottles must be in school at all times so children have access to them.
- Children will have 2 reading books; 1 to remain is school and the other to read at home.
- Homework is also issued each Friday. Homework will be made up of three activities: GPS; Reading; and Arithmetic. This must be returned by the following Friday for marking.
Reading
Reading is vital to a child’s education & development. It is beneficial for them to read to others, where they can be questioned and there full understanding of a text developed & can also help improve their confidence. Children should be reading as much as possible at home & this should be documented in their reading records, these will be checked regularly. Once a child has read three times in a row they will receive a token for the weekly raffle to win a small prize of their choosing
Times Tables Rockstars
Times tables are crucial for anyone & is a skill we use more than we realise. It will help the children with their daily arithmetic and their maths in general.
Maths
In Maths we will be continuing with Power Maths. In the first term the focus will be as follows:
Unit 1: Place value within 1,000,000 (1)
Unit 2: Place value within 1,000,000 (2)
Unit 3: Addition and subtraction
English
In English we will be looking at arrange of both fictional and non-fictional topics. Children will have the opportunity to plan their writing by identifying the audience and purpose, as well as, having the opportunity to self-edit their work to make it the best it can be (which is good practise for year 6).
What are we learning this Half Term?
Dynamic Dynasties - This project teaches children about the history of ancient China, focusing primarily on the Shang Dynasty, and explores the lasting legacy of the first five Chinese dynasties, some of which can still be seen in the world today.
