English

At Templars Academy, our English curriculum is designed to develop fluent, confident readers and writers who can communicate effectively and think critically. We provide a rich and balanced programme that nurtures a love of reading, strengthens language comprehension, and builds strong writing skills.

Our curriculum:

  • Prioritises systematic synthetic phonics (SSP) in early years and key stage 1 to ensure secure decoding skills, supported by the DfE’s Reading Framework and evidence from the Education Endowment Foundation.
  • Builds fluency and comprehension through progressively challenging texts, promoting reading for pleasure and academic success.
  • Develops pupils’ knowledge of the English alphabetic code and phonics to underpin reading and spelling proficiency.
  • Encourages the study of carefully sequenced literature, enabling pupils to appreciate literary craft, themes, and genres, and to make meaningful connections across texts.
  • Supports writing development through explicit teaching of grammar, vocabulary, and composition skills, enabling pupils to express ideas clearly and creatively.
  • Emphasises spoken language and discussion to deepen understanding and articulate ideas effectively.
  • Recognises that progression depends on incremental learning of curriculum content, not solely on final written outcomes or exam criteria.
  • Provides targeted support to close gaps and ensure all pupils, including disadvantaged and SEND children, make strong progress.

We are committed to delivering a high-quality English education that equips children with the communication skills and cultural knowledge they need to succeed in school and beyond.
